At Home

Sometimes, it’s far easier to organize a backyard celebration. Beyond the typical burger and BBQ, there are fun ways to involve the kids in planning and celebrating.

Movies- Have your kids pick out their favorite All-American flicks! Movies like The Sandlot, Field of Dreams, John Wayne, American Treasure, etc., are fun for the whole family and a good way to escape the heat for a bit.

Party prep- Get the kids involved in making foods that are red, white, and blue.  I will never turn my nose up at a good old-fashioned American flag cake! The classic vanilla icing with strawberries and blueberries is a great way to get little ones involved in the food preparation. Other options could be patriotic Rice Krispies treats (they make a special summer version of the cereal!), fruit salad, or even having them help decorate the table.

Bring the (safe!) fireworks home- Left up to my husband, this could get dicey. But things along the lines of sparklers, poppers, and even patriotic pinwheels have been a huge hit for decades! You can get them at Target or Walmart easily, making your life easier but still bringing a special feel to the holiday.

Honey Harris
Born and raised in Pensacola, Honey lived away for 19 years before moving back in 2018. After graduating from Vanderbilt University, she moved to DC where she spent over a decade working on campaigns and consulting for Members of Congress. She and her husband, Chuck, made the decision to come back to Pensacola with their son, Charlie, in 2018. Since then, she has opened her own political and nonprofit consulting firm, welcomed their baby girl Godwin, and is loving every second of being back home with her family.
