Safety First: A Guide for Everyone in the Family

Personal safety is a topic that’s close to our hearts but often sits quietly in the background

In a world where being cautious is a part of daily life, it’s vital that everyone—moms, dads, sons, and daughters—understands the importance of staying safe in public spaces. After a solo trip that brought my own safety habits into sharp focus, I’ve realized the need for a broader conversation on this issue.

Because when we know better, we do better—for ourselves and each other.

My Eye-Opening Experience

Last fall, I ventured to Kentucky alone to meet another CPA. It wasn’t until after booking my trip that the reality of renting a car, driving at night, and staying in an Airbnb (solo) hit me. This prompted a deep dive into safety research across Google, Facebook, and TikTok.

Beyond discovering some fantastic tips, I learned something crucial: women and men often view safety differently.

This realization sparked a mission to bring awareness to the unique safety challenges women face daily.

As I prepared for my trip, packages filled with safety gadgets began arriving. My husband’s curiosity about the growing pile of Amazon boxes led to a profound conversation about the specific uses of each item and why they were necessary.

Though initially quiet, his reaction showed a deep contemplation over the safety practices I’ve integrated into my life—practices he was largely unaware of.

The Reality of Our Daily Vigilance

Every outing is a calculated risk. Whether it’s using my key fob’s panic button or checking in on our teenage daughter, safety is always on my mind.

Even routine tasks are moments of alertness:

  • At the gas station, I’m constantly scanning my surroundings, a habit born from necessity.
  • My purse is never just thrown in the shopping cart: It’s secured, always.
  • Walking alone at night isn’t just a walk: I make calls through headphones, keeping one ear free to stay aware of my surroundings.
This isn’t about fault or blame; it’s about understanding and taking action. Recognizing the extent of my daily safety precautions was a revelation for my husband, and it has since opened a crucial dialogue within our family.

Practical Safety Tips for Everyone

  1. Always Let Someone Know Your Plans: Whether you’re traveling or just stepping out, make sure someone knows where you’re going and when to expect you back.
  2. Stay Connected: Regular check-ins by text or call can make all the difference.
  3. Be Present and Aware: Avoid getting lost in your phone. Your surroundings need your attention.
  4. Safety in Numbers: Whenever possible, travel with others.
  5. Have a Plan: If you’re alone, be ready to call someone. Keep one ear free to hear what’s happening around you.
  6. Carry a Noise-Making Device: A key fob alarm, like a She’s Birdie Personal Safety Alarm, can draw attention in an emergency.
  7. Consider Carrying a Tactical Pen: Be mindful of travel regulations. Alternatively, these regular pens with steel bases were recommended in a safety group
  8. Secure Your Stay: Use a portable door lock for added security in hotels or Airbnbs.
  9. Alarm Your Door: A door stopper alarm can alert you to unwanted entry. Door Stop Alarm, Door Stopper…
  10. Leverage Technology: Use apps like Find My iPhone or Life360 to share your location with trusted contacts. The iPhone message app lets you share your route and ETA, notifying a contact if you don’t check in as expected.
Hit the + in iMessage, choose “check in”, and then send the alert through text.

Your Safety, Our Mission

This conversation about safety isn’t just a one-time discussion; it’s an ongoing mission to empower ourselves and our loved ones with the knowledge and tools to navigate the world more safely.

Now, whenever we’re out, I’ve realized it’s not just me vigilantly watching over a teenager navigating the Target parking lot alone—my husband is keeping an eye out, too. Once we’re back in our car and see the teenager has safely crossed, we share a silent hope—that somewhere out there, someone is extending the same watchful eye to our own kids.

Remember, safety isn’t just a personal responsibility—it’s a collective one. By sharing our experiences and strategies, we not only protect ourselves but also support each other in fostering a community of awareness and preparedness.
