Meet Ashley King

How many kids do you have? What are their ages?

Ashley KingI have three kids. Mason-10; Ford-8; Hazel-6

What do you do for a living?

I am a urologist who focuses on female incontinence and prolapse. I offer both surgical and non-surgical options for these issues, affecting both younger and older women. I work at the Woodlands on Davis Hwy with a great multi-specialty group that provides urology, hematology/oncology, radiation therapy, and primary care. My job is what brought me to Pensacola, and I would not trade my group for anything.

What do you do to reset and recharge, especially with the craziness of life right now?

I think that exercise, prayer, and mediation all help to keep calm in my life. Without these outlets, I would be lost! I meditate 20 minutes in the morning when I wake up, and when I rarely miss a morning, my entire day is off. Also, I love to run and do CrossFit as well. CrossFit has gotten me back into weight lifting, which I have a hard time making myself do on my own. Of course, I will not turn down a nice day at the beach with a good book though!

What do you like about raising a family here?

Ashley KingWe moved here from Cleveland, Ohio, so the ability to have my kids outside most of the year is very important to us. I love taking them to the beach, pool, or park. I love the community we have found here as well.

What is challenging about raising a family here?

Our main challenge is that the rest of our family lives in Richmond, Virginia. Everyone has worn the roads down between here and Virginia driving back and forth to visit, but it is not the same as having our extended family living in town. However, the draws of the area have kept us here despite the distance.

What is your favorite local thing to do/place to go?

Beach, beach, beach!

Is there a hidden gem in Pensacola you love?

I would not say it is a hidden gem, but we love to go on little hikes around the nature preserves or near UWF. The trails were a nice outlet during quarantine as well.

How can Pensacola better serve you as a mom?

This may be random, but I wish there were more options for swim teams here. I always swam on swim teams growing up, and I wish there were closers options for us.

What piece of advice would you give to mothers right now?

I don’t have any advice for other mothers because I think we are all doing our best.

But I would tell myself. “Breathe. Pause. Don’t beat yourself up. Everything is going to work out, and your kids are going to be fine. And try not to raise your voice or curse.”

Tell us about your favorite thing to do in your downtime?

Read a book on the beach all alone…..oh, I meant to say, spend time with my kids:)

The Navy brought Jen and her family to Pensacola in 2018 following a 3-year tour in Belgium. Born and raised in the Midwest, Jen’s career path took her to Washington, D.C., after college, where she lived until she married her husband, Tim, in 2007. Balancing family and career against the backdrop of military life has made her appreciate the importance of friendships, connections, and finding your “mom tribe” wherever “home” may be. While living in Belgium, Jen took on her most challenging role to date, that of a stay-at-home-mom to her two sons, Timothy and Charlie. In this position, she has been forced to face her fear of cooking, has learned that you never “catch up” on laundry and that she continuously works longer hours for less pay! Fueled by coffee, Pure Barre, and dry shampoo, she feels like she’s “winging it” when it comes to motherhood most of the time, but couldn’t imagine a more rewarding journey. She continues to learn from her kids every day.
