Don’t underestimate the magic of a Thermos!
We all crave a warm, hearty meal when lunchtime rolls around and hunger strikes. But let’s face it—between work and school, who has the time to indulge in that? Kids, with their short lunch breaks, certainly don’t.
And is it practical to prepare a midday feast when there are still hours of productivity ahead?
Probably not.
In many cultures outside the U.S., lunch is the main meal of the day. You’ve likely heard of a ‘Siesta,’ where businesses close so families can gather, enjoy a large meal, and recharge before returning to work.
It’s a wonderful idea, but the reality in the American mindset is different—time is money.
As school curriculums expand and classroom hours grow longer, children’s minds are nourished, but their health can sometimes take a back seat. If your child’s school offers a meal program, you may try to guide them toward healthy choices.
But let’s be real: a slice of pizza often wins over a bowl of broccoli, and Lunchables make life easier.
Here’s a little secret: with just five extra minutes in the morning, you can transform your lunch routine—and it works for both you and your kids!
The magic of a Thermos lies in its ability to maintain its temperature. Pour in hot water to warm it up before adding your meal or ice to keep things cool. In my household, we primarily use our Thermos for warm meals.
There are a few simple steps to keep food hotter for longer.
While you’re making breakfast, fill the Thermos with hot water. Here are three quick ways to do it:
- Run the hottest water from your sink.
- Microwave a cup of water for two minutes.
- Boil water on the stove or in a kettle.
I prefer the quickest method—hot tap water works perfectly for me!
When it comes to filling the Thermos, leftovers are your best friend! I layer our meals with carbs, proteins, and veggies. Casseroles and pasta are great options; they’re easy to scoop and reheat. The key is to get your food piping hot before packing it.
For me, two minutes in the microwave does the trick.
Below, I’ve shared some easy Thermos lunch ideas to get you started.
Hot Dogs: Instead of using regular hot dogs, I use German sausages.
- Prick each sausage with a fork 3 times
- Wrap in paper towel
- Microwave for 20 seconds or until warm
- Leave a quarter cup of hot water in the bottom of your thermos
- Add as many sausages as your kid will eat
Extras: Wrap Hot Dog buns in a paper towel and place them inside a Ziploc bag. Recycle any fast food condiments you have lying around for toppings.
Other handheld items for the thermos:
Warm: Brisket, pulled pork or chicken
Cold: Tuna salad, chicken salad, egg salad
Lentil Soup: This is a high protein and nutritious meal usually served with a side of rise.
- Pour your reheated Lentil soup
- Top with a scoop of warmed white rice
Soups, in general, hold up great in a thermos.
Chicken Dinner Leftovers: With the depth of a thermos, you can layer your items.
- Add your carb/starch – Mashed potatoes, rice, noodles, grits, etc.
- Add vegetable side dish leftovers – Broccoli, mushrooms, carrots, peas, etc.
- Add your protein – Chicken, beef, pork, etc.
- Top with heated sauce or gravy
Pork Braised Ragu Pasta: Pasta meals make a great all-in-one meal for a thermos.
- Heat it in the microwave
- Add to your heated container
