Christmas is a season of joy, family, and traditions. In our family, one cherished tradition is creating a special family ornament each year. This is more than just a craft; it’s a way of capturing memories and creating lasting tokens of the years gone by.
The Beginning of Our Yearly Ornament
Our tradition began a few years ago, inspired by a browsing session on Pinterest. We decided to evolve our regular ornament-making into creating a “year ornament.” This concept was similar to the yearly review letters people used to send with Christmas cards, offering updates and highlights of the year.
The Memory Question
Each year, I ask my kids to reflect on a fond memory from the past year. The question is simple: “What was your best memory of this year?” The answers, often filled with laughter or surprise recollections, become the theme of our yearly ornament.
A Walk Down Memory Lane
Over the years, we’ve created various ornaments, each reflecting a cherished memory. The process is filled with laughter, sometimes disbelief at their own choices, but always a lot of fun. It’s a delightful journey to revisit these ornaments each year, reminiscing about what made each year special.
Two years ago, we did cardboard and Mod Podge – I typed out their answers and put them on the back. See below.
Last Year’s Highlight: Shrinky Dinks
Last year, we tried something new – Shrinky Dinks. The kids had never used them before, and the excitement was palpable. Watching their designs shrink in the oven was a moment of pure joy and wonder.
This Year’s Enthusiastic Choice
Given the success of last year, when I asked what type of ornament to make this year, the unanimous choice was Shrinky Dinks!
The Creative Process
We spent a wonderful weekend around the table, crafting and laughing. Among all the ornaments we make, the annual memory ornament holds a special place in my heart.

- Punch a hole before shrinking
- Follow the instructions with the packet
Tips and Tricks with Shrinky Dinks
I’ve experimented with different types of papers, and here are some insights:
- Colored Pencils Work Best: After sanding the shrink material, colored pencils are the easiest to work with. BUT Watch the Oven Closely: Shrink material can fold on itself, so it requires careful attention.
- Printable Shrink Paper: Offers great quality but shares the folding issue. Watch the oven closely and be ready to pull out and flatten.
- Permanent Markers on Shrink Paper: This is the easiest method, allowing for creativity and fun without much hassle. We will continue using them this way from here on out.
Our family ornament tradition is not just about crafting; it’s about bonding, reflecting, and creating a tangible piece of our family’s history. It’s a tradition that brings us closer and adds a unique charm to our Christmas celebrations.
My daughter, with the help of Dall-E, created this basic starting piece for us to use this year. Print and use on your 2023 ornament. It’s a reflection of living on the Gulf Coast!
