Four Ways to Help Your Child Succeed This School Year

We are always trying to ensure our kids do well in school, but sometimes it’s hard to know what’s best.

How can we know when kids need help?

Is COVID affecting their performance?

How much can parents affect children’s success in school?

Enter Karyn Scarbrough, a former Escambia County teacher and current CEO of Rising Minds Learning, who shared with us some tried-and-true tips to address these concerns & help kids succeed this year:

Ask Proactive Questions

Most of us have been there: we think kids are doing fine in school until we get their first report card. By that time, it becomes hard for students to play catch-up because they dug themselves into a hole in the first semester. You might avoid this by asking your kids some honest questions: “Do you enjoy math?” or “Has reading been difficult for you lately?” are some examples of questions you can proactively ask to gauge your child’s interest & learning level in those areas. It’s better to do this sooner, so you don’t have to do damage control after a semester of bad performance!

Understand That Students Need Support Now More Than Ever

We all know COVID has affected students, but how much has it really impacted their ability to learn? Well, a recent study might have the answer: in this study conducted by Horace-Mann, it was found that over 97% of educators reported a loss of learning by their students compared to previous years. On top of that, 57% estimated their students are behind by more than three months in their social-emotional learning progress. This means two things:

  1. We need to take the COVID learning gap seriously; and
  2. We need to go beyond traditional learning to address social/emotional learning needs.

Embrace Your Child’s Unique Learning Style

This may be a cliché, but it’s true. Every student has an ability to learn, but each has a unique learning style that isn’t always a great fit for a traditional classroom setting. If your child isn’t doing well in school, it may be because they need to emotionally relate to the material or because they learn better with visual examples. You’ll be amazed by how efficiently students can learn once they are in an environment that works for them.

Parents: Believe in Yourselves!

Sometimes it can feel like students’ abilities are out of our hands and that their ability to learn is shaped more by nature than nurture.

This just isn’t true!

As a parent, you can choose how active you want to be in your child’s schooling. Sometimes those decisions are hard: You may worry about your child’s ability to handle a new learning setting or that investing in a tutor may be a waste of time. If your child is struggling, it’s likely you won’t know what works for them until you try multiple solutions.

If you find one that works, won’t that make the search worth it?
